About Dr. Cole

Alexander Cole, M.D. is the founder and owner of Colleyville Psychiatric Associates. He is board-certified in adult psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and has been in practice in the Dallas area for more than 10 years.

Dr. Cole was born and raised in the Dallas suburbs. He graduated from Newman Smith High School in Carrollton before attending college at Baylor University in Waco. While at Baylor, he served as a student senator, a member of Baylor’s Student Foundation, and president of the Alpha Phi Omega coed service fraternity. He majored in biochemistry, minored in Great Texts of the Western Tradition, and graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of science.

After graduating from Baylor, he entered medical school at the University of Chicago’s Pritzker School of Medicine in Chicago. While at Pritzker, he taught local elementary students about human anatomy, served as a member of the medical school’s admissions committee, served as an educational consultant for the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry, and graduated on the medical education track.

He returned to Dallas to complete his internship and residency in psychiatry at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center/Parkland Health & Hospital System. As a psychiatry resident, he was selected to be an American Psychiatric Association Leadership Fellow, an American College of Psychiatry PRITE Fellow, and a member of the American Journal of Psychiatry Resident’s Journal editorial board. During his final year of training, he served as chief resident of psychiatry.

After completing training, Dr. Cole joined the UT Southwestern Department of Psychiatry faculty. He spent his first year on faculty working in the University Hospitals interventional psychiatry service and treatment-resistant depression clinic before joining the inpatient psychiatry service at Clements University Hospital. He also worked as an emergency room psychiatrist at Parkland Hospital and a consultation-liaison psychiatrist at Clements University Hospital. While at UT Southwestern, he taught and supervised medical students and psychiatry residents, served as a member of the University’s Medical Education and Curriculum Committee, and served as the medical director of the Clements University Hospital inpatient psychiatric unit. Though no longer working full-time at the University, he continues to teach residents and other doctoral-level trainees in addition to treating patients on the University Hospitals electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) service. He is also an advanced candidate in the Dallas Psychoanalytic Center and training to become a board-certified psychoanalyst.

Dr. Cole’s clinical interests include mood disorders, anxiety disorders, interventional psychiatry, and psychodynamic/psychoanalytic psychotherapy.
